Shannon Airport dealt with two further emergency diversions since operations were brought to a standstill for over two hours on Monday morning 5th February when the crew of a cargo flight used an emergency slide to evacuate their aircraft on the runway. Following on from that the crew of an Air France flight from Paris to Chicago declared an emergency over the North Atlantic also reporting they had a passenger on board who required medical assistance.

Flight AF-136 was about an hour southwest of Ireland, over two hours into its trip, when the crew declared a medical emergency and turned around. The crew opted to divert to Shannon and requested that emergency medical services be alerted and available for them on arrival.

The flight landed at Shannon at 3.41pm and was met by airport fire and rescue crews. Emergency vehicles remained with the Airbus A350-900 jet as it was directed to a remote stand where an ambulance was waiting. The ill passenger was transported by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. ~The Clare Herald

Multi agency response to a vessel that struck Killaloe Bridge in County Clare on Wednesday 29th March. The alarm was raised at 12:17hrs after a vessel with two persons on board got into difficulty while trying to tie alongside at Ballina Quay. The vessel lost control in strong currents and ended up sideways stuck under the first arch on the Tipperary side of the bridge. The vessel had been damaged in the impact but was not taking on water.

A Multi agency response involved units from Killaloe Coast Guard,  CE15  Killaloe Fire and Rescue service, R115 from Shannon Airport and National Ambulance service from the Scarriff station. Killaloe Coast Guard set up a line from Ballina Quay and maneuvered the Rescue boat back onto the causality vessel, a crew member was transferred on board and removed the two occupants from the vessel, the Coast Guard boat then brought the two persons ashore at Ballina Quay,  once everyone was safely ashore and no injuries were reported R115 and the NAS were stood down. After an assessment of the vessel Killaloe Coast Guard attempted to tow the vessel but failed on the first attempt due to strong currents.

After a brief between the officer's on scene the Killaloe Fire and Rescue service set up a winch from the stern of the vessel back to Ballina Quay, the Coast Guard crew also set up a tow line from the stern of the vessel. After almost four hour's of great team work between the two crew's the vessel was safely removed from the bridge and moored at Ballina Quay. Well done to the crew from CE15 in Killaloe and   our crew from Killaloe Coast Guard for a great team response with a good outcome. ~

After the fire was brought under control the area was cordoned off to prevent anyone approaching the cylinders while they continued to cool. The scene was expected to remain cordoned off overnight and most of Thursday as a precaution

Shannon Fire Service dealt with a significant oil spill on roads around Shannon including the main access road to Shannon Airport on Tuesday 1st February. Earlier in the day, they responded to an aircraft emergency Shannon Airport along with Ennis Fire Service, National Ambulance Service and Gardaí (to support Shannon Airport Fire Rescue Service) when a Cargolux Boeing 747-400 reported a possible fire on board and the crew issued a Mayday radio distress call

Shortly before the aircraft was due to land at Shannon the flight crew confirmed that the fire indication was no longer active. The aircraft landed safely at 5.45am and was pursued along the runway and accompanied to the terminal building by fire crews. Airport fire crews carried out an external inspection of the jet’s fuselage using handheld infra-red heat detectors before undertaking a visual inspection inside the jet’s cargo hold. It’s now thought that the fire indication was a false alarm. ~Pat Flynn / The Clare Herald
