Major Incident on Mourne Mountains, County Down 23rd-25th April 2021

Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) completed its Firefighting operations in the Mourne Mountains at 4.50pm on Sunday 25 April. The fire, which covered 3.5 square kilometres and started in the early hours of Friday 23 April, is believed to have been started deliberately.

On Saturday 24 April NIFRS declared this a major incident. At its height over 100 Firefighters, 12 Appliances from Stations across Northern Ireland, 3 4×4 vehicles, the Specialist Rescue Team and a Command Support Unit were all mobilised to the scene of the huge wildfire. Firefighters used beaters, jets and specialist 4×4’s to extinguish the fire.
