Next generation fire kits for Clare firefighters

Mayor of Clare, Councillor Tom McNamara, today officially presented Clare County Fire and Rescue Service with 166 sets of next generation fire kits for firefighters. The Fire Action Matrix X-treme kits were acquired from Hunter Apparel Solutions Limited at a cost of €243,000 and represent the latest in a number of positive developments for the local Fire Service. Earlier this year, construction works began on upgrading and extending Kilkee Fire Station as part of a €661,000 investment in modernising the facilities for Kilkee Fire Brigade.

The Fire Service recently took delivery of high pressure lifting bags at a cost of €66,000 to enhance the response to road based incidents. The Fire Service is also awaiting final approval to order a new Class B Fire Appliance costing €340,000 for expected delivery in 2019. Speaking today, Mayor McNamara said: “The new protective clothing will continue to provide crews with the best protection they have ever had at incidents. The high quality specification underlines Clare County Fire and Rescue Service's commitment to the safety of its frontline crews and will provide greater protection to firefighters on the incident ground."

Carmel Kirby, Director of Physical Development, commented, “Clare County Council is committed to ensuring that its Fire Service personnel are provided with Fire Kit that provides a high standard of protection to the wearer, while also ensuring that personnel can be easily visible, particularly at road-based incidents.” “Following an extensive tender process, the choice of Hunter Apparel Solutions Limited’s Fire Action Matrix X-treme Fire Kit will provide the highest possible performance which exceeds the current requirements of the standards,” stated Chief Fire Officer, Adrian Kelly.

He continued, “As part of the procurement process for the new fire kits, Fire and Rescue Service personnel in Clare were involved in trialling the clothing for comfort and fit across a range of role-related scenarios.” Mr. Kelly said that direct exposure to flame and radiant heat is among the greatest hazards that fire fighters face during turnouts. “Thermal insulation is key to staving off this effect and providing those crucial seconds. The innovative material structure and new high tech intermediate layer of the Fire Action Matrix X-treme delivers substantially greater protection and comfort than required in the European Standard EN 469. Radiant heat is blocked almost entirely, even under prolonged exposure,” he added. ~Mark Dunphy / Clare County Council

Boston Fire Photographer Stephen Walsh RIP

It is with Great Sadness that we have learnt of the passing of Boston Fire Photographer & Friend of the Website Stephen Walsh "The Flannel Photographer".

Steve over a number of years used to send us on photos of Incidents in the Boston & Greater Boston Area which we greatly appreciated and Steve was delighted to have his photos on show in Ireland.

Steve was himself the son of a Late Boston Firefighter and well known amongst the Fire Service family.
Sadly of late Steve's health took a turn for the worse and earlier this year Steve had both legs amputated which changed his life completely. Although we did not know Steve personally we were aware of Steves struggles but he tackled them with great strength and spirit.

Steve is survived by his Mother, Sister and many many friends. We send our condolences to them all at this difficult time

RIP Steve

Historic Dublin Aerial Appliance Preserved

We are delighted to report that Dublin Fire Brigade's Retired HP from Dun Laoghaire Fire Station has now been handed over to DFB Firefighter / Paramedic Willie Bermingham for Presavation

Willie wrote:

I’d like to thank the Dublin Fire Brigade Chief Officer, Mr Pat Fleming, Assistant Chief Mr Denis Keeley, District Officer in charge of workshops, Tommy Butler and all the mechanics. Today I collected 87D19999 for preservation. It was purchased new by the DFB in 1987 as a turntable ladder and was converted into a hydraulic platform in 2003. It served until late last year 2017. During its time it carried the remains of serving firemen to their graves, including my own father. This truck holds so much sentimental value to me. It’s future is now secure and will hopefully be enjoyed by people of all generations.

We would like to congratulate Willie on everything he did to get the Appliance Preserved.

For those who would like to see the Appliance up close it is planned to make an appearence at the Blues & Twos Vintage Club Show in Corkage Park. Details to follow
