A US bound passenger jet was forced to make a u-turn over the Atlantic yesterday (Monday) and divert to Shannon Airport after a smell of smoke was detected on board, writes Pat Flynn. El Al Israel Airlines flight ELY-007 was en route from Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv to New York's JFK at the time. The massive Boeing 747-400 Jumbo Jet, with 338 passengers and crew on board, was about 200 kilometres west of Mayo at around 1.40pm when the crew notified air traffic controllers at Shannon that a smell of smoke had been detected in the passenger cabin.
Airport crash crews took up positions on taxiways along the runway from where they raced after the jet after it landed safety shortly after 2.30pm. The crew confirmed that they would not need to evacuate the aircraft on the runway and instead taxied to the terminal building. Fire personnel wearing breathing apparatus were ready to board the aircraft as once it reached the gate while other crews remained on standby with water hoses at the ready. Firefighters carried an initial sweep of the aircraft in an effort to located the source of the smoke while engineers stood by ready to investigate the problem further.

Over 300 holiday makers were left stranded in Ireland last night after their flight suffered flight control issues over the Atlantic and was forced to divert to Shannon Airport, writes Pat Flynn. Virgin Atlantic Airways flight VS-76 (pictured above) was en route from Orlando in Florida to Manchester at the time, and was about 500 kilometres west of Shannon when the crew contacted air traffic controllers to report a problem.
The crew said they needed to divert to Shannon but requested time to test the Airbus A330-300's handling before commencing their approach to land. Airport crash vehicles were standing by for the jet as soon as it touched down at 8.03am. Firefighters travelled behind the aircraft to the terminal building where they remained on standby for a further 30 minutes, fire hoses at the ready, checking the braking system and landing gear in case it had overheated during the landing.
