Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) and Monaghan Fire Authority have recently held a large scale, cross border, emergency training exercise.  The purpose of the exercise was to test the operational response of both emergency services when responding to a multi vehicle road traffic collision with numerous casualties in the border area.

The exercise took place on Sunday (2 December 2012) and a staged collision at Corrs Corner Co Monaghan involved a tractor, a trailer transporting a hazardous material, 2 lorries, 6 cars, a motorcycle and tour bus.  Fire Appliances from Keady, Armagh, Newry, Crossmaglen, Lisburn, Glengormley, Monaghan, Castleblaney, Clones and Ballybay Fire Stations responded to the mock up incident which involved 120 Firefighters and 31 ‘casualties’.

The exercise also enabled other responding agencies including the An Garda Siochána, Monaghan County Council and the Civil Defence to test their own operational response to an incident of this scale.

Simulated fires on board the vessels and people trapped on the vessels further intensified the difficulty for the various agencies responding to the mock up “major incident”.

NIFRS Marine Response Team, NIFRS Special Rescue Team worked along side the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the Belfast Coastguard, the Irish Coastguard, the Royal Life Boat Institution (RLNI), the Ambulance Service, the Police Service and other agencies to carry out search and rescue operations at sea.
